DOC - Off The Charts, The Song-Poem Story

A fascinating look at the history of the song-poem

A remarkable documentary about the history of the song-poem, the people who send in their poems, the people who record the songs and the people who collect the recorded results.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Song_poem:

Song poem usually refers to song lyrics that have been set to music for a fee. This practice, which has long been disparaged in the music industry, was also known as song sharking and was conducted by several businesses throughout the 20th century in North America.

TAPE CRACKERS

Image

DVD from: http://www.factmag.com/2011/06/29/tape-crackers-arrives-on-dvd/For the entire duration of the film the camera is pointed at just one man, a classic bedroom obsessive named Michael Finch. The charming, instantly likeable Finch shows off his peerless collection of pirate radio tape recordings made in the mid-late 90s, and talks with unbridled enthusiasm and expert knowledge about each one. It’s not just about drum ‘n bass, it’s about a bygone era when serious fandom required real dedication, and the internet wasn’t yet sufficiently evolved to make sense of – nor dull the impact of – what was new and exciting in music and street culture. You can order a copies from Boomkat and The Trilogy Tapes.”

The Joy of Easy Listening (2011)

The film looks at easy listening’s architects and practitioners, its dangers and delights, and the mark it has left on modern life.

From its emergence in the 50s to its heyday in the 60s, through its survival in the 70s and 80s and its revival in the 90s and beyond, the film traces the hidden history of a music that has reflected society every bit as much as pop and rock - just in a more relaxed way.

Invented at the dawn of rock ‘n’ roll, easy listening has shadowed pop music and the emerging teenage market since the mid-50s. It is a genre that equally soundtracks our modern age, but perhaps for a rather more ‘mature’ generation and therefore with its own distinct purpose and aesthetic.

Contributors include Richard Carpenter, Herb Alpert, Richard Clayderman, Engelbert Humperdinck, Jimmy Webb, Mike Flowers, James Last and others.”

Charles Mingus by Thomas Reichman

In 1968 filmmaker Thomas Reichman made a documentary which primarily consists of band footage and one to one interviews with Charles Mingus. What is revealed is an intimate portrait of one of America’s most prolific and original composers as well as arguably the genre’s greatest bass player. Throughout the documentary Mingus’ demeanour is steeped in bitterness and anger as he ranges through topics as diverse as race, sex, democracy. The film has moments of poignancy particularly at the end when a run in with the Police leaves Mingus being questionably arrested with an abrupt ending leaving the viewer to wonder as to how the situation was resolved. Just finished. What a great film! I never expected a metal doc to turn on the waterworks: tears of inspiration/joy by the end.
It starts out as a kinda pathetic hamster-wheel story about some failed rockers who won’t accept that it’s over, but over the course of the film, their story reveals the importance of having dreams, busting your ass and staying positive even when it seems hopeless, plus the value of family and tight friends who help you along. Lead singer Lips is now the new Courage Wolf/Tony Robbins/Eckhart Tolle. Anvil and Andrew WK should do a collabo.
Highly recommended.
Also, they’re playing at the Biltmore in May. Who’s in?
