 The Crystal Ark | XLR8R

Insane podcast, goes all over the place and nestles in the higher levels, worth downloading for the opening track alone: Astarius’ “Spirit Rap” sure is something.

The blurb:

It’s not often that XLR8R receives a podcast that was conceived as a “meditation tape,” but Gavin Russom has never exactly been a “normal” artist. Over the years, the veteran NYC producer has taken numerous musical forms, the only constants being his affinity for vintage synths and his affiliation with the seminal DFA label. His current focus is The Crystal Ark, a Latin-tinged collaboration with vocalist Viva Ruiz.

True to the “meditation tape” concept, the podcast is full of ocean and rainstorm sounds, and begins by balancing zen vibes with tropical sounds and jazzy excursions. However, within a short time, Russom and Ruiz find the groove, loosely channeling ’80s and ’90s house in the process. After delivering a solid 30-plus minutes of pumping rhythms, The Crystal Ark cools things down in unique fashion, juxtaposing Patti Smith with Tadd Mullinix and D’Angelo and somehow making it work.

The journey, not the destination, man.

Also, some proper background on these gents via this well-penned RA piece. H/T to baltimorehorses  for that one.

Old School J-pop Vol II

It’s been a while, folks!
The last mix was good fun, so on a lazy Sunday morning, I put together this playlist of some more favourites from the 50s - 70s: Think Showa-era, kayoukyoku, old school J-pop and enka of good vintage.

Featuring: Masako Mori, Meiko Kaji, Aoe Mina, The Wild Ones and more.

IN CASE YOU FORGOT…

||| Thee Summer 2012 Mixtape: Side A.  |||

Hai dozo.

Recorded lazy-style on the couch with the AC going late one Saturday night.

A little swing, a little latin, a little Showa kayoukyoku, some Balearic vibes. A little bumrocks-heavy, no matter: solid.

Think: day off, porch/balcony, iced green tea, Suntory highball, smoke ‘em if you got ‘em.

Well, hello there 8Tracks, it’s been a long time. Since…Vancouver? Wow. I have the uploader nestled in among my cluttered apps folder and everything. I forgot about you. Oops.

For old time’s sake, and because I’m working on a new summer mixtape proper, here’s a preview:

Roberto Gatto, Hermeto Paschoal, After Dinner, Mikado, Berntholer, Jolly Kunjappu, lots of sexy French talkovers and more….

Recommended: porch/balcony, iced green tea or Suntory highball.

 Benjamin Damage & Doc Daneeka | XLR8R

Nice to hear the Midland & Pariah track (fave of the year so far), as featured on the West Norwood Cassette Library mix I’ve caned heavily on this blog….yup, a few months on,  still going through heavy rotation over here. ANNNNNyways:

As for the duo’s mix, it finds Benjamin Damage and Doc Daneeka skating along the nebulous territory where so-called “bass music” intersects with classic techno and house sensibilities. Much like the pair’s own productions, their selections here are often the sort of tunes that breathe new life, not to mention unique rhythms, into the standard techno template. It’s a compelling listen, and something that provides an interesting preview of where many bass-music refugees might be heading in the not-so-distant future.”

SolarFlares — Thee Spring Mixtape || 2012

Listen

Thee Spring Mixtape, 2012: Days are getting longer, sleeves are getting shorter,
or: Easy on the Kozmische synth this time. Promise.

Recorded in two sessions because I never have more than 45 minutes to myself these days (domestic and professional life here in my corner of Japan has become rather hectic), but still- there’s time for a Sunday drive to some corner of Nara, and it’s finally warming up.

Made with going for a prefectural spin in mind, the latest mixtape offers up good ol’ ramshackle garage, Northern Soul, Brazilian fuzz, ColdWave, NoWave, synth punk, postpunk, French psych, Showa-period J-pop, some trusty old Neue Deutsche Welle, plus my old stomping grounds Vancouver gets a shout-out via UJ3RKS and They Shoot Horses Don’t They.

Enjoy, my friends: (((RightClickSaveAs)))

EDIT: Hmm, having some technical difficulties with dropbox. Hang tight.

Busy days….

The Autumn Mixtape, 2011.

A king can of Asahi and a couple of hours to kill in a 4 & 1/2 tatami room. Warts-and-all live mix of what I felt like listening to that day: some library music, minimal synth, Neue Deutsche Welle, Space/Italo disco, new-ageyness, french psych & yeh-yeh…in other words, the usual suspects. I’m consistent that way. The mix, however, could use some tweaks, but—-meh. Enjoy.

Tracklist to follow.
